April 1, 2014- The CB1 updated the status of Rep. Nadler’s attempts to have the Coast Guard come up with a common sense solution to the ferry boat horn issue. The bottom line is that the Coast Guard is not yielding.

Yes, you can start by attending local meetings at CB1 and BPCA that discuss this problem. Last week, this was on the CB1 agenda and only one man from 22 River Terrace showed up. With apathy like that, you all deserve these horns, sad to say.

I think part of this was bad timing between the ferry noise starting back up and the CB1 meeting. The noise from the ferries has been pretty much nonexistent over the past two months. It tapered off to a single ferry boat operator using the horn during weekday afternoons last month.

I’m not sure if it’s due to laziness of the operators or something else, but I doubt the noise had been much of a concern for anyone since early February. Last week a new weekend ferry service was added because the PATH train has been undergoing maintenance. I speculate they hired new operators for this and using the horn during departures is now part of their training. It’s still sporadic though, as the horns were being used last Saturday morning and this Sunday morning starting at 8:40am each day.

If it continues I’m sure more people will show up to complain at the next CB1 meeting. Personally, I don’t think it’s as bad as being woken up at 6:05am during weekday mornings, so it’s not as much of an issue for me, although it’s still a bit annoying. Anyone who stays out late weekend nights will have more than a bad hangover to deal with.

    Tom:

Your statement “The noise from the ferries has been pretty much nonexistent over the past two months.” is not true: Come by the ferry terminal at 6AM and listen. There are three operators and noise exceeds 90dB.

Everyone affected by this needs to realize that it is a problem that affects a small group of people. You will accomplish a thing by being apathetic and cowardly, staying at home when meetings take place in the library, in your own 2 River Terrace building.

As of now, you all deserve the noise.

Easy, easy – some of us were there. The problem seems to be progressing ok for the time being.

A related question – anyone know what the giant crane next to the ferry station is up to?
