The New York Police Department’s (NYPD) First Precinct, led by Commanding Officer Brendan Timoney, has now placed walking patrolmen within the boundaries of Battery Park City (BPC) to counter the spike in grand larceny and other crime. The recent robberies of megayachts anchored in the North Cove Marina was a driving factor.
The marina robberies were caught on security video. Personal items, such as purses and electronics worth more than $1,000 each, were snatched as the perps boarded the soft-target yachts from the docks.
The perpetrators were in their late teens to early 20′s, light skinned, and not matching the descriptions of other robbers that have committed crimes recently in BPC. This means that multiple gangs have targeted the relatively affluent unsuspecting residents unaccustomed to such crime.
Last weekend, a rare violent robbery took place in the basketball courts of West Thames Park. A mother and her son were playing basketball, when a gang of professional robbers staked them out and stole her electronic gadgets. Violent skateboard gangs have also been a problem, unsuccessfully addressed by the Park Enforcement Patrol (PEP) of the city parks.
