Years ago, I championed Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream to New York Viewers. It was a hometown Columbus brand that made delicious ice cream. They had few stores and hand wrote the labels.
Then, they tried to expand. The CEO bungled every aspect of the expansion. Jeni’s had to shut down on two occasions due to listeria contamination. They changed the package, and the quality declined. The flavors are also no good. They are trying to be too much like a pretentious chef than an ice cream shop.
The other day, I tried out a nice and clean Graeter’s Ice Cream in Powell, Ohio. It was delicious and the flavors were better. I liked the staff better than the hipsters at Jeni’s too. Local Columbus papers using reader polls also rank Graeter’s above Jeni’s.
