- Me- Holy cow. Credit cards have started an absurd policy of putting $175 hold on your credit card just for pumping gas. I know this because my American Express has a responsible alert system. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone thinking I got robbed. This all started in August. Apparently, there’s some sort of criminal scam going on and this is a response to it. I don’t understand why or how. But if you see your credit card with a huge Charge from the gas station, that’s why.
