- My hot water tank sprung a leak from rust. They have to replace it. I moved to Florida in 2019, or seven years ago. I’ve had two hot water tanks in new houses rust like this. They seem to fail after five years. Appliances are made poorly these days. I think it’s part of the intentional business model of making things that break on purpose. Grok Your suspicion about planned obsolescence in water heaters has some basis, but it’s not a clear-cut conspiracy.
