Stem Cells

This is another biomedical research development, using stem cells created from normal skin cells and then converting them into nerve cells to repair various damage. Last year, a team from Japan treated paralysis in a man. This one is replacing degenerative cells to reverse Parkinson’s.

That Japanese development caused me to look into this technology. It’s been 25 years since I have paid any attention to this cellular technology.

Two big developments have occurred since I left biosciences research. First was this Yamanaka method of using viruses to insert genes into normal skin cells that turn into stem cells. (Six years later, CRISPR came along that was a quantum leap development in the ability to manipulate genes.)

It used to be that one had to get stem cells by harvesting them from the bone marrow or other methods. Now, we can create stem cells easily.

But it’s not that easy. The stem cells will turn into cancer tumors if they are not controlled. So, this Parkinson’s study details how they’re using growth factors and other small molecules to guide the stem cells and turn them into the desired organ tissue.

My interest in this was with the face. I had the idea of replacing the lost volume of the aging face with stem cells that turn into fat. Various people have tried this by harvesting liposuction cells and have had various levels of success. If they can adapt this technology now being used for neurological diseases to one that can create fat cells, then we can rejuvenate the face without the need for surgery.

By the way, if I may digress, we live in a world dominated by false geniuses in Silicon Valley who think they are smart because they can create crude AI machine language algorithms. Elon Musk thinks he’s clever because he can create a rocket. While those are good achievements, they pale in comparison to the biological sciences. It’s chaos in biology and cannot be predicted or described by mathematical formulas.

This stem cell science is an example. How a fetus can start as a clump of cells and then differentiate into all of these different organs is unfathomable. It requires a whole cocktail of signaling agents. We know next to nothing about it.

It’s Science that you can’t directly observe. You can’t look at cytokines and growth factors under a microscope. You have to indirectly measure everything. It is not research I ever did myself, but I was in a lab of people who did that. I knew enough to learn the big picture and important concepts.

Where are the aliens?

I truly am a super genius. I’m sitting here and just came up with a concept that apparently is well known by a famous person.

First, I realized that it seems statistically impossible for aliens not to exist, with hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone, trillions of planets, countless habitable zones. The numbers are basically infinite on a cosmic scale. Life should be everywhere.

So, why the dead silence?

We have been blasting radio waves into space for 120 years. The nearest potentially habitable exoplanet (Proxima b) is just 4.24 light years away, and our signals reached there over a century ago. Any intelligent civilization there, or in the other nearby systems, should have heard us decades ago. Yet… nothing. No replies, no technosignatures, no visits.

That’s the real mystery. The universe looks empty where it should be crowded.

This is the Fermi Paradox: the contradiction between how likely intelligent alien life should be and the total lack of evidence for it. Enrico Fermi simply asked: “Where is everybody?” Where is everybody?

I had no idea that the Fermi paradox existed until I had Grok help me with this story. I came up with this on my own.
