- President Trump sent Speaker Johnson and Sen. Grassley letters today arguing that hostilities with Iran “have terminated,” as the conflict hits the 60-day mark. The letters come amid mounting bipartisan pressure on Capitol Hill for the administration to come to Congress for authorization. And they follow Secretary Hegseth’s comments yesterday that the 60-day clock pauses during a ceasefire.
- Straight out of 1984: Declare an indefinite ceasefire. Claim hostilities are “terminated.” Tell Congress: War Powers Resolution clock resets. Maintain a military blockade, which is an act of war. Launch further hostilities at any time. Fight for another 60 days.
- Trump doesn’t understand even the most basic aspects of constitutional law. Here, he says that no other country follows our Constitution (right, it’s the U.S. Constitution) and also that Congress’s voting on war (which is its role under the Constitution) is unconstitutional.

Normal Politics:
- Trump just sent a letter to Congress saying the war in Iran is “terminated” because today marks 60 days and in order for the President to have the authority to continue, the Constitution requires a vote from Congress. But the war is not really terminated. Trump is just restarting the clock to avoid a vote from Congress that may limit his power to wage a war on Iran, and the war is absolutely not over just because there has been a ceasefire. Also, Trump is about to start military actions again very soon. It never ended. This is unconstitutional and Congress should reclaim it’s constitutional authority.
