Dangerous med spas

This is very interesting. It’s a story about one of these IV regenerative med spas, where patients get IVs with all sorts of unproven claims about cleansing heavy metals from the blood, etc. It’s quackery.

In this fatal case, the TPN solution contained too much potassium, which caused a woman’s heart to stop. The report notes that a medical doctor served as the medical supervisor and now faces murder charges.

These Florida med spas have approached me to serve as their medical director. A surgeon in New York warned me that it was a bad idea, and I am glad he did.

I was also in discussions with another group. They made me an employment offer to serve as medical director for a strip-mall-style location where they performed full liposuction. Liposuction is no small procedure. It is very easy to disfigure or kill patients. They currently perform these procedures with untrained staff who are not physicians.

After meeting the owner, I observed too many red flags and withdrew. The man funding the operation is a serial entrepreneur with a background in medical device sales. He is about 60 years old and fits the stereotype of the slick character one would see on Shark Tank.

In general, this explosion of the med spa industry must be curtailed. I published an essay on the topic about 25 years ago in the prestigious journal PRS. Med spas were nonexistent at that time.

We now face a situation in which the majority of minor procedures, whether plastic surgery or routine primary care, are handled by individuals who are not physicians. Many years ago, states addressed the doctor shortage by expanding the role of nurse practitioners, but the required training was a joke. The process has been abused.

We now have the tail wagging the dog: nurse practitioners attempt to hire retired or questionable doctors to serve as medical directors while they run the offices. Several nurse practitioners have approached me with the same arrangement. They believe they can hire a physician. They have the relationship entirely reversed.

Governor DeSantis needs to end this.
