- Before he created “Breaking Bad,” Vince Gilligan co-wrote a TV episode about a hijacked passenger plane flying straight toward the World Trade Center. It premiered six months before 9/11. In the story, a secret group inside the U.S. government takes remote control of a Boeing 727 full of passengers. The plan is to crash it into the Twin Towers, blame foreign terrorists, and start a profitable war. More than 13 million people watched it. The show was canceled a few months later, and most people forgot it ever existed. On September 11, Gilligan watched the attacks on CNN like everyone else. As he looked at the smoke rising from the towers, one thought hit him: “Wait a minute. We wrote this.”
- In exchange for making that predictive programming, he got his big break with a series that was hyped by the machine as great when it wasn’t.
