Across the city today, schools have held town hall meetings to discuss their security plans with parents in the wake of the Newtown massacre. In many cases, schools have open doors with no security detail at the main entrance. If a “security guard” does exist, they are often woefully untrained or inadequate to stop an upset parent, much less an armed madman.
In private apartment buildings of Manhattan with doormen, it is not well known that those staff are not required by their contracts to act as “security” and stop unwanted guests from going past. Moreover, in many cases, the night shift staff sleep on duty after in the early hours of the morning.
The threat from guns is real for residents of Manhattan. In most cases of mass murder shooting sprees, the gunmen have been white males from upper middle class towns, such as Newtown, Connecticut. There was also a recent assassination of a man in Midtown Manhattan one block from Central Park.
What should be done about security? Is the “security” in our fancy apartments an illusion to make us feel better? Should schools become more like fortresses? We pose these questions for your response.
