Be thankful if your mother is alive

This week, over the course of several hours, I had to admit both of my parents into hospitals. One was pre-planned. One was an emergency.

My mother underwent elective knee replacement surgery, and was being admitted into the post-op rehab facility. Everything is fine, but we had a brief scare.

During this stressful time, my father was on his third day of a slow upper-GI bleed caused by aspirin he was on for a shoulder injury. The stress likely added to the ulceration.

So, I had to get on the phone to several facilities and arrange for various medical care. I can laugh about it now, but it was harrowing.

Today, for Mother’s Day, I sent some flowers and sweets. My mother is easily pleased and was delighted.

After this happened, I called an old medical school roommate. His mother passed away two weeks ago from a rare lung disease that led to pneumonia.
