danny3May 20, 2015- Crains’ reports that Danny Meyer might take over the 40,000 square-feet of Hudson Yards that was supposed to go to Fairway Grocery Store. Super-chef Tom Keller has also agreed to build several new mid-range restaurants in the Yards that will not compete with his 3-Michelin-star Per Se.

First, the Poulakaos team made Le District Downtown as what many called a “French Eataly”. Now, Mr. Meyer has an American food market in mind to compete with Eataly. Meanwhile, Eataly cannot get off the ground in the WTC site because of the Port Authority delays.

Interestingly, years ago, I was telling Mr. Meyer how his restaurants transform rundown neighborhoods and that the real estate people should be thankful for him. He said that he had regretfully never taken advantage of the real estate upside he created. Well, he has made up for lost time with Hudson Yards and the Whitney Museum.

Will we see a Danny Meyer condominium or hotel soon? He can’t do worse than Ian Schrager.
