Holy cow my instincts were correct. I am becoming a bird expert.
There was a black bird the same size in shape as the grackle. Except it was a loaner. It was also seemingly more intelligent and less skittish. It seemed like a smart bird. It also had black eyes instead of the white eyes of a grackle.
I was able to get a good photograph of it just now and, sure enough, it is a Fish Crow. That is a completely different species. Crows are smart. This thing will be a pet like my Sandhill Crane.
It looks so much like a grackle that Google Images was calling it a one. I had to show it the proper photo before it found Fish Crow.
