October 19, 2013- The Howard Hughes company broke ground o the new Pier 17, as one last tenant tries to resist progress. Crain’s reports, “The Howard Hughes Corp. announced that it will break ground on a new 300,000-square-foot retail mall at Pier 17 in lower Manhattan on Thursday. The existing large retail building at the site, which has floundered for decades, will be replaced with a large glass, multilevel shopping center that the company hopes to fill with upscale stores, restaurants and event space. Howard Hughes is hoping to make the new pier the linchpin of a larger plan to reinvigorate the greater South Street Seaport area.”
