The lead-up to World War II in 1939 was defined by aggressive territorial grabs, the collapse of appeasement, and economic chaos lingering from the Great Depression (like the economy now). Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 (the Anschluss) and seized Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland under the Munich Agreement (like the Ukraine war now), which was a desperate and failed attempt by Britain and France to avoid war. Hitler’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, finally forced Britain and France to declare war. Meanwhile, Imperial Japan had been waging a brutal war in China since 1937, Fascist Italy conquered Ethiopia in 1935–1936 (the reverse is happening now with migrants), and the Spanish Civil War served, where communists staged a coup, was a dress rehearsal for fascist and communist forces (Like Antifa now). The League of Nations was powerless (like the United Nations now), America clung to isolationism (Like Trump’s aversion to war), and a global arms race accelerated (the nuclear arms race is back). Within six years, more than 70 million people would be dead.
Now, over the last three days, the world has abruptly become destabilized. Multiple leaders are teetering (UK, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and even the USA) or have been ousted (South Korea, Japan), alliances are fraying (Western Europe is hostile to the U.S. and freedom in general). It is all eerily similar to 1939.
In Britain, PM Keir Starmer is fighting for survival. Labour MPs are openly plotting against him after a disastrous budget and plunging polls. Allies describe him in “full bunker mode”.
In The U.S., President Trump is escalating pressure on Venezuela in what the White House calls a counter-narcotics surge, but others describe as a regime-change operation aimed at China’s control in Latin America. The USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group moved offshore to Venezuela. U.S. forces have been sinking drug-running vessels, and the CIA has been given fresh covert authority. Nicolás Maduro has been presented with a stark choice: lucrative oil deals and safe passage out, or forcible removal. Analysts warn of a potential “Latin Vietnam” if U.S. troops become entangled in Venezuela’s jungles and cities.
In Mexico City, President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered tall steel barricades erected around the National Palace ahead of massive protests over the cartel assassination of mayors and candidates. The fortress-like defenses symbolize a government bracing for siege.
At home, Trump faces a growing revolt from his own base. The long-promised full release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files has stalled—officials now say no formal “client list” exists—sparking fury among MAGA. Infighting over H-1B visas and other policy reversals has left the president appearing unsteady, no longer fully in command of his movement. His FBI director, Kash Patel, is under fire for covering up the identity of the January 6th hoax pipe bomber, among others.
On the left, genuine communists have scored victories: Democratic Socialists of America member Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, joining a growing bench of far-left officeholders. While claims of a coordinated plan to primary 29 sitting Democratic senators and representatives remain unproven, the momentum is real. The US currently has communists running New York City, New York State, California, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Illinois, Seattle, Oregon, Portland, and others. In the United States Congress, there are a dozen or more communists, such as AOC.
China has expressed concern over the Venezuelan crisis. Beijing’s surrogate Iran is mobilizing diplomatic and financial countermeasures.
Russia, is accelerating production of its Oreshnik hypersonic missile, recently used in Ukraine, and threatening to deploy them in Belarus. Moscow’s deepening ties with Tehran and Venezuela complete a new axis of resistance.
Every flashpoint—Venezuela, Mexico’s barricades, Starmer’s bunker, Trump’s faltering grip, Russia’s missiles—is similar to 1939. Will the proxy wars in Ukraine and Venezuela flare into the open?
The key driving force toward WW3 is the global failing economy. Desperate times lead to desperate measures. The U.S. stock markets are poised to implode as the AI scam unravels. That will expose the broader base of the submerged iceberg, as private equity and consumer debt bubbles fail next. Israel will take advantage of the crisis and try to expand power. Domestic leaders will be pushed out.
Stay tuned.
