I am not an expert on The Godfather. I was too young when it came out, but I have seen it. I watched it again last night. HBO has a new version of it playing, where they combined Part 1 and Part 2 into a seven-hour binge viewing, with some added scenes.

Wow. That series holds up to this day as cutting edge and excellent cinema.

The directing and editing by Francis Ford Coppola are great. He uses long cuts like Birdman. The pace is slow to emphasize subtleness. Just when I expected to see a cliché, Coppola avoided it.

I liked how one single punch by the crooked cop broke Al Pacino’s jaw. That is realistic.

Marlon Brando was fantastic. He deserved the Oscar that he won. He was my age when he played that role, but he looks like a 65-yo grandfather.

Coppola and George Lucas were young directors and friends when they made Star Wars and The Godfather. Both films were flukes. The directors thought that they would flop. The studios barely green lighted them.

I wish we had more films like this coming out of Hollywood.
