I enjoyed the original Blade Runner that came out in 1982, so I was looking forward to “Blade Runner 2049” Unfortunately, the executives in Hollywood tried to insert too many mass appeal tricks and turned the film into a boring mess.
The decision to cast Robin Wright as the dystopian Los Angeles police chief ruined the film. She cannot act, and simply reads her lines without emotion. She is essentially the exact same character as Claire in House of Cards.
Ryan Gosling did a decent job at playing the new Blade Runner cop. Harrison Ford revived his role, except that he aged, which is strange to see in a genetically engineered artificial human. Or is he human? I am not certain.
Jared Leto played the role of the new oligarch who controls the fake humans his company creates. Unfortunately, the script he was given was absurd. For example, why was he blind? They can’t do eye transplants any longer? They performed those in the first film. If they can create entire fake humans, why can’t they create new eyes?
This film also plays a part in what I am convinced is a Hollywood conspiracy to increase smoking among white males in order to increase mortality and sway the electoral college (Liberals really think of grand schemes like this.) Gosling’s character smokes.
Director Denis Villeneuve did an atrocious job here. Ridley Scott should have been the writer and director.
In summary, this film is slightly more watchable than Westworld. It is not a complete waste of time, but it could have been so much better if Hollywood were not a dying industry trying to make everything blockbuster action.
