Update: July 5, 2012 By Steven Greer

The Community Board meeting on July 3rd provided an update on the traffic signal work on Murray Street and North End Avenue. The city DOT will install a traffic light at the dangerous Murray Street and North End Avenue. Recall, a man was run over by a city bus recently as he crossed North End Ave by Murray Street. The triangular park nearby creates a fork in the road of Murray and two entrances onto North End. As vehicles pass southward on North End and stop for the first stop sign, they do not stop for the southern entrance of Murray, which is where pedestrians cross.

The work will begin later this month. City DOT spokesperson Nicole Garcia wrote, “The DOT expects the installation of the traffic signal to begin in approximately two weeks, weather permitting.” Murray Street is currently being excavated and replaced with a new concrete base.

The BPCA will be separately installing a traffic signal at the crosswalk near the Shake Shack and Goldman Alley to address that dangerous situation.

BatteryPark.TV has learned that the construction on new street crossing with stoplights, for the Shake Shack crossing and the North End/Murray crossing, will being on Monday. The work is being led by the BPCA. Recall, a local man was recently run over by a city bus when he was crossing North End Avenue by Murray. At the Shake Shack, the ball fields generate the traffic of children.
