February 25, 2015- The East River ferry boats have been stopped due to the ice. However, the Hudson River ferries and tour boats are still risking punctured hulls and sinking, becoming 21st Century Titanics, for a few extra bucks.
Who regulates these boats? No one apparently. they are interstate companies and fall through the regulatory cracks.
The boat companies also seem to have effective lobbyists. They have the local officials on their side. For example, CB1 Chairwoman Catherine McVay Hughes is trying to allow boats to dock at Pier A despite the pier being structurally unfit.
