For most of the year 2013, numerous members of the community, including Community Board 1, held several meetings and walking tours with the city DOT, and came up with specific plans to make the streets of BPC safer. Then, for unknown reasons, the BPCA recently instructed the DOT to not go forward with those plans, despite several pedestrians and crossing guards being struck by cars in 2014.
We attended the May 6th BPCA meeting and asked Chairman Dennis Mehiel why his BPCA put a halt to the DOT street safety plans. He refused to explain, using the cover of “We are going into executive session”.

The one thing these guys should be competent at is spending other people’s money — and when they finally get something reasonable and positive for the neighborhood, they can’t even do that right!!
I hope this doesn’t have anything to do with lobbying that several buildings did to oppose the changes based on “the hardship” it would cause residents getting in and out of buildings with packages and pups. I am sure those same folks would prefer to be alive and kicking rather than South End Avenue Roadkill!
I believe they halted the plans as it would impede all the tourist buses from the Memorial and Pier A from double and triple parking in our neighborhood. Perhaps if a tourist gets hit by a car the bpca and cb1 will start to take an interest in safety.

While we’re on the subject of safety, when are they going to stop cyclists from using the esplanade from the Gateway down to Pier A? Talk about an accident waiting to happen. I see toddlers nearly clipped by bikers every weekend. Bikes aren’t allowed anywhere else on the water path further north and it’s way too crowded on the esplanade. I’m neither a biker nor a mother, but I see near misses all the time.
