After Hurricane Sandy created thousands of refugees in New York City and surrounding area, Homeland Security, via FEMA (as well as the Red Cross, Salvation Army), assisted the refugees by helping them relocate. LeFrak’s Gateway Plaza took in an unknown number of people who no longer had homes.
