In 2007, after the Wall Street Journal was acquired by News Corp, Paul Steiger, the managing editor of the paper, became the CEO and Editor-in-Chief of ProPublica.
As the print newspapers folded, the investigative journalism they provided dried up in many regions. Investigative journalism is the costliest type of journalism. To address this problem, philanthropists Herbert and Marion Sandler gave the money to fund ProPublica. Located in Downtown New York, it became the first online news venue to win a Pulitzer Prize.
ProPublica has partnered with numerous traditional news sources, such as CBS’ 60 Minutes, NPR, and NBC. We had the pleasure to speak with Mr. Steiger as he prepares to step down from the full-time CEO, Editor-in-Chief role.
