When I see social media posts like this, where people think they are being clever by pointing out that our dollar bill has Masonic symbols on it and so forth, it makes me laugh. There is no secret or conspiracy to it. Our Founding Fathers were absolutely members of the Masonic ‘church’, if you will, and they were Deists. They were not Christian. They were not of any organized religion at all.
This was the Age of Enlightenment in the 1700’s. The Founding Fathers looked back with scorn upon the Puritan era of religious extremism, superstition, and brutality of earlier periods. They had witnessed the Puritan witch trials and centuries of church-dominated persecution and wars. The Age of Enlightenment emphasized reason, science, natural law, and individual liberty over blind faith and priestly control. The Constitution has no mention of organized religion at all, for this reason.
Deism was accurate for several of the most prominent Founders. Benjamin Franklin was the epitome of this. As a scientist, he believed in Providence and a Creator but was skeptical of dogma, miracles, and Christ’s divinity in strong terms at times. Thomas Jefferson edited his own Bible to remove miracles. He used “Nature’s God” in the Declaration of Independence and was a Unitarian-leaning Deist. Thomas Paine was a militant Deist who called Christianity “a fable.”
The Founding Fathers were Deists who believed in a Supreme Being, or a Great Architect or Creator, who designed the universe like a perfect clock, set the laws of nature in motion, and then largely stepped back without constant intervention. They rejected miracles, religious dogma, holy books as literal truth, and organized religion in general. Instead, they saw God through reason and the orderly workings of the natural world. They still acknowledged divine Providence favoring their cause, but they wanted nothing to do with the controlling churches of the past. Ben Franklin epitomizes this with his constant scientific discoveries.
It is also not some conspiracy theory that Freemasonry is a founding principle of this nation. George Washington and the French architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant literally designed Washington DC with Masonic symbols and geometric elements. Washington was a Mason who laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol in full Masonic regalia. Benjamin Franklin was a Mason as well. The United States seal from 1782 is Masonic too, with the eye, the pyramid, the 13 arrows, etc. These draw from Enlightenment and Masonic motifs, not some covert occultism. It is all right there in plain sight and was never intended to be a secret.
There is a misconception about this country that it was founded based on the Christian bible or Jewish scriptures. That is false and part of an effort that started 100 years ago to rewrite history. The U.S.A. is a Deist country and the closest thing to a church are Masonic temples.
All of this history is difficult for many people to digest today because Freemasonry has been unfairly lumped in with a host of genuinely sinister secret societies and occult groups accused of child sacrifice, Baal worship, Satanic rituals, and global control schemes. These include the Bavarian Illuminati (a short-lived 18th-century Enlightenment order twisted into a world-domination myth), alleged Palladist cults, various high-degree occult offshoots, and modern conspiracy narratives involving elite clubs with bizarre rituals. Over the centuries, especially through anti-Masonic panics and hoaxes like the Taxil affair, Freemasons got painted with the same brush as these darker elements. While the original Masonic order of Washington and Franklin’s time was likely a wholesome fraternal network promoting reason and liberty, it is possible that subversive elements later infiltrated and perverted parts of it, just as they have corrupted so many other institutions in the world. Power attracts parasites, and no organization stays pure forever.
Understanding all of this is crucial now. The country has been hijacked by religious zealots justifying crimes against humanity by quoting scripture. They literally want a World war 3 with Russia to create mass extinctions and a world in which they will survive in their elaborate underground bunkers.
