Steve Buscemi was already famous in 2001. People knew the face from Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Con Air, The Big Lebowski, and Armageddon. Firefighters at Ground Zero recognized him as “that guy from Con Air.” After the attacks on 9/11/2001, he put the old Engine 55 gear back on and worked 12-hour shifts on the pile. He did not tell the media and few knew. Earlier that year, he had directed the famous Pine Barrens episode for The Sopranos, which aired in December 2001. So, while he was digging at Ground Zero, that classic was still in the can. He joined the cast as Tony Blundetto in 2004.
