I reluctantly viewed the 2017 film “I Tonya” because there are slim pick’ns on Netflix. I was pleasantly surprised.

Margot Robbie produced an Oscar-worthy performance playing the infamous ice skater, Tonya Harding, who conspired with her husband to assault competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Allison Janney did win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

The plot surrounds the actual events that led up to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Tonya’s white trash husband, Jeff Gillooly, and his friend hired two men from Detroit to break Nancy Kerrigan’s knee during an Olympic qualifying event. They were easily caught before the Olympics, but Tonya was allowed to skate. It set up one of the most memorable dramas in sports when Tonya skated in against Kerrigan.

However, this is a film about abusive parenting and marriages that created Tonya Harding. She is an interesting character because she has ambition and skill, but is held down by her witch of a mother and wife-beating husband.

This is a good film. I recommend it.

Bonus Review: The Shape of Water is pretentious PC crap wholly undeserving of the Oscar.
