Until today, I had no idea if my journalism on The Greer Journal was actually being read at a respectable rate. I installed a weekly metrics tracking app was quite surprised. My news site is much bigger than others of its kind.
Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly Views:
The tracking app revealed that my publication outperforms the typical independent news blog by pulling in
- 62,141 weekly views, which translates to
- 270,202 views per month and
- 3,242,429 views per year.
This traffic outperforms the standard industry benchmark of 5,000 to 25,000 weekly views when compared apples-to-apples against similar niche outlets.
Content Breadth
I have a ton of content. I started this 17 years ago, in 2009, as BatteryPark.TV.
My tracking data shows a content breadth of 9,531 individual stories receiving views in a single week. In comparison, a standard independent news blog sees only 100 to 500 active items generating traffic during the same period.
Top Post Concentration
My top-performing article accounts for only 0.69% of total traffic. Standard news blogs rely heavily on a single trending post, which typically hogs 20% to 40% of their total traffic. My traffic is evenly distributed across my articles, lowering the risk of a traffic collapse if one post drops.
Conclusion
I make these news posts and essays for myself and a few other people. It turns out that I have been relevant all along. That makes sense because I am frequently claiming that I caused one national event or the other.
Greer knows.
I might put some effort back into it. In NYC, I made some elaborate stories, like touring the Four Seasons hotel and Oculus as they were under construction, etc.
The problem is that views do not translate into money. Hmm.
Any one out there want to invest?
