WSJ essentially repeats our tour of Brookfield with Ed Hogan

December 23, 2013– God bless em, our bumbling friends at the WSJ have taken their ideas once again from BatteryPark.TV and reported on the new Brookfield Place, interviewing none other than ed Hogan, just as we did in November.

In today’s paper, “Luxury retailers’ storefronts—which function as banners for their brands—will be visible along West Street, a critical factor to wooing high-end merchants, said Edward P. Hogan, Brookfield’s national director of retail leasing. Michael Kors, Theory and Calypso St. Barth are some of the other brands that have signed leases. “Luxury brands have no intention of putting their flags underground,” Mr. Hogan said. “It’s important to have a street presence.” Continue reading

State bill to mandate grocery store health inspections be made available online

Gristedes surveyDecember 26, 2013- We previously reported how different the grocery store health inspection process was from the restaurant inspection process. The state agriculture department governs the grocery store inspections, whereas the city oversees restaurants with the infamous window-posted letter grades. Moreover, no information can be found on grocery store inspections. Therefore, delis and other “restaurants” within a grocery store are often disgusting.

A state bill aims to change that. Continue reading

Exclusive: Who is behind CB1’s move to dissolve the BPCA?

BPC aerial view 3December 19, 2013- By Steven E. Greer

BatteryPark.TV first exclusively reported that the political winds were shifting in favor of dissolving the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) as it exists now, and possibly having the city assume control of the 92-acres of land. Shortly thereafter, the BPC subcommittee of the CB1 discussed the matter on December 3rd, with the board members for the first time aggressively challenging the need for the BPCA.

The CB1 only makes such bold moves when politicians behind the scenes direct the members to do so. Which politicians were controlling the CB1’s strings? Continue reading

City plows ahead with West Thames bridge design opposed by the community

Diagram west thames bridge from June 4 CB1

December 3, 2013- By Steven E. Greer

For the first time since June, the team from the city, led by Matthew Best, presented more detailed plans for the $30,000,000 West Thames Bridge, called “Speaker Silver’s Bridge” by some. Recall, the LMDC is being phased out, and Speaker Silver has managed to get the state to allow $20 Million to be used to build the bridge. Somehow, even though designs were never officially made, the bridge was estimated to cost a whopping $30 Million, requiring the BPCA to pitch in at least $7 Million. Progress with the bridge stalled in April when it became clear that Governor Cuomo and the BPCA were unwilling to go along with the plan.

Assuming the bridge could actually be built, the city’s bridge team presented fancy architectural drawing in June before the CB1. The plans were mostly imaginary since the actual real designs were not yet drafted. However, a contentious component of any bridge design quickly arose: should ramps be built on each side the highway, making it more reliable than the elevator/stair design that has broken down so often with all of the other bridges connecting BPC to FiDi and Tribeca?

The main proponent of the unreliable elevator design has been Continue reading

Mobs of Tribecans meet the opening of China Blue

Blue China frontDecember 13, 2013- By Steven E. Greer

I visited China Blue tonight on the second day of their soft opening. However, it seemed more like an establishment that had been around for a while given the large crowd and wait for a table. Clearly, people were anticipating this opening. The entire strip of Washington Street has been closed since Hurricane Sandy, and China Blue was replacing a landmark in Capsouto Frères.

Blue China dining room crowdRight away, it is obvious that China Blue is a true upscale Chinese restaurant: something that Downtown needs. The new interior is modeled after an early 20th Century Chinese restaurant theme. For larger parties, a side room that resembles a library is available. Continue reading
