BatteryPark.TV has previously reported on the bias-by-omission in the local advertising flier called The Broadsheet. The bias and conflicts of interest, we reported, arose from payments from the BPCA to the publisher of the Broadsheet and online Broadsheet Daily.

With the departure of the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) President and CEO Gayle Horwitz, and the similar unexpected departure of Bill Thompson as Chairman, the opportunity has arisen for some much needed reforms within the BPCA. For years, Gayle Horwitz has hosted dog and pony show “Town Hall” meetings, then proceeded to completely ignore the concerns of the community. In lock-step, some of the puppets on the Community Board 1 have been complicit enablers of the BPCA hand that feeds it. As a result, a long laundry list of problems in the BPCA await resolution by the new Chairman Dennis Mehiel and his boss Governor Cuomo.

In 2010, shortly after the previous BPCA administration chose Asphalt Green to manage the $55 Million community center on North End Avenue, various organizations enjoying monopolies for decades became threatened and pushed for a revision to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the BPCA and stakeholders using the ball fields. The revised MOU has gone unsigned by the BPCA for two years. Gayle Horwitz, former President of the BPCA, refused to sign the MOU shortly before her departure two weeks ago.

The monthly meeting of the BPC division of Manhattan Community Board 1 displayed more of the deceit and poorly concealed Machiavellian scheming to prevent Asphalt Green from becoming a reality that was displayed last month. Recall, BatteryPark.TV exclusively reported that the September meeting of CB1 was essentially a “dog and pony show” orchestrated by the now departed BPCA President Gayle Horwitz’s staff to deceive the community about the true nature of the delays of Asphalt Green. The BPCA team speaking at the meeting insisted that secret contract negotiations to change the Asphalt Green contract were not underway. One week later, on September 11th, BP.TV exposed the hiring of a powerful litigation firm by the BPCA, and President Horwitz announced her resignation the day after our story.

BatteryPark.TV previously reported on the recent Board meeting of the BPCA whereby one topic discussed was the approval of an increase in budget to Sam Schwartz Engineering to provide a staff of eight people to guide people across the West Side Highway at the dangerous intersection, such as West Thames and Albany Streets. During the meeting, board members were cynical that the $76,000 per crossing guard was worth it, and how much of that went to the middleman Sam Schwartz.

Damage to West Thames grass field from soccer class

As BatteryPark.TV previously reported, the West Thames grass field has held up this year due to proper usage, which includes small groups, sunbathing, kite flying, etc. The organized soccer leagues have been, for the most part, kept away. However, a few parents determined on using the grass field for organized soccer have persisted.
