Letter: We need developments to save the Seaport

Pier 17 SeaportFebruary 26, 2014- By Battery Park Dad

While I applaud the effort to ensure that the community around the Seaport has a voice via the Seaport Task Force, I have to question the naiveté of the community leaders opposed to developing the Seaport. NYC is a tough place to get big projects done. The idea of driving a community effort sounds great, but I fear that it will fail, and the Seaport continue to decay.

Contractors cost money and money demands a return Continue reading

Letter: Sick and tired of the unending helicopter noise

January 4, 2014- By Delia von Neuschatz

Our elected officials have accomplished absolutely zero in mitigating the tourist helicopter issue since air tours moved to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport in 2008 after they were banned from using the East 34th Street and West 30th Street heliports. The time for letters to the FAA and noise studies and the like is over. NJ politicians met with the FAA about this in September and absolutely nothing has been accomplished. It is now time for action.

These unnecessary helicopter sightseeing tours should be phased out completely beginning with Continue reading

Gale Brewer sends strong message that her administration will be different

February 26, 2014- By Steven E. Greer

At the February 25th CB1 meeting, elected officials made a rare appearance to discuss their new Seaport Task Force. Prior to the Fall 2013 elections, under the leadership of City Council’s Margaret Chin, Scott Stringer, State Assemblyman Sheldon Silver, and billionaire Mayor Mike Bloomberg, the Howard Hughes Corporation was making progress at developing a large commercial and residential development in the ghost town called the Seaport, by Pier 17. Many in the community had felt that Howard Hughes was hoodwinking them and not telling them the true story about some of the plans.

Now, things have changed after the election of Gale Brewer as the new Manhattan Borough President. Continue reading

Details separate Blue Smoke from the rest of the pack

https://youtu.be/UczfQJDMh6k

February 7, 2014- By Steven E. Greer

Have you ever had a Southern-style biscuit made in a restaurant that was not so dry that it did not require butter and jam to prevent sticking to the roof of your mouth? How often is the butter served in restaurants too cold and hard to be spreadable? Are you afraid to look too closely at your water glass?

All of those issues are the fine details that separate fine dining at a Michelin-star restaurant from a lesser establishment. At Blue Smoke in Battery Park, Continue reading

Scrap the entire Community Board system

CB1 meeting 1-28-2014Opinion January 29, 2014- By Steven E. Greer, MD

I forced myself to walk into the freezing cold and attend the monthly CB1 meeting held at the Manhattan Youth building. I wanted to see whether the CB1, in their
“Accomplishments” agenda item, would take credit for grand things for which they actually impacted little (such as the opening of WTC Tower 4, or the demolishing of buildings on Governor’s Island). What I observed was an even more feckless rambling of delusional self-importance than usual.

The longest discussion focused on the “resolution” Continue reading

My Grandmother: a pioneer in education of sorts

Colleg women in the 1930sFebruary 6, 2014- By Steven E. Greer, MD

My mother posted the note, below, her site today. It is about her mother’s (my grandmother) 100th birthday. I found it interesting as it relates to women’s education in the 1930’s and 40’s. My grandmother and mother are from Iowa, and her father, my great grandfather, was the Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

My mother wrote today: “Today would have been the 100th Birthday of my beloved Mother. I will be celebrating her special day in my head all day today.

She had a brilliant mind, having earned a Masters Degree in English and Foreign Languages. In her era, college educated women were few.

After college she became a High School French and English teacher. It was during her teaching career that she met my Father. It was love at first sight, and they married after just a short three week courtship. And their true love for each other never ended.

Mother gave up her teaching soon after her marriage to become a full-time mom to five children. I am the oldest.

Her English teaching was passed on to us with her insistence of correct grammar and the love of reading.

Sadly, her Continue reading
