Bob Townley sends Manhattan Youth kids to his own camp in the Catskills

Kitchen and table

January 1, 2013 By Steven E. Greer, MD

We previously reported what was known and unknown about Bob Townley’s Manhattan Youth finances, based on the Form 990 from the year 2010. There were many large item expenses that could have been paid to either Mr. Townley himself or cronies. Also, there were other ways in which Mr. Townley and his center could generate revenue greater than what was listed in the form. BatteryPark.TV has since learned of one such example. Continue reading

Latest arrests of State Assemblyman seem familiar

NY-CG681_STEVEN_G_20130404190439April 5, 2013- The latest in several arrests of New York State Assemblymen by federal prosecutors were made over allegations of the elected officials accepting bribes in exchange for helping prevent new competition to a community center. If that sounds familiar, it is because shady deals in our own backyards of Tribeca and Battery Park have very similar components. Continue reading

New flood zone maps favor Battery Park City

ABFE_Lower-Manhattan-ComparisonMarch 1, 2013 By Steven E. Greer

BatteryPark.TV was the only local news site operational and reporting updates on the status of the flooding as the Hurricane Sandy storm surge came and went, leaving BPC virtually unscathed (see video below). Many readers were incredulous when they read our headline “Hurricane Sandy: Battery Park unscathed compared to rest of New York“. Months later, most people still have no idea that BPC was safe from the flood water and power outages. The region has been lumped in with the devastation of nearby FiDi, Tribeca, and the Seaport.

Now Continue reading

Explanation of the Asphalt Green contract

GettingtheFieldReady

March 28, 2013 By Steven E. Greer

The local advertising flier, The Broadsheet, posted a misleading article by Matt Fenton about the amended contract between the BPCA and Asphalt Green. It gave the reader the impression that the BPCA was providing a very favorable contract to Asphalt Green. The article stated, Continue reading

It’s official: Pick-A-Bagel the worst restaurant in Battery Park

Pick a Bagel store front

March 31, 2013

Opinion– Since posting our first story on the decline of the Pick-A-Bagel on South End Avenue, it has become one of the most read stories of the year. It seems official now that Pick-A-Bagel is the worst restaurant in Battery Park, which is saying a lot.

In a region infamous for low quality restaurants that get shut down by the Health Department, only to reopen under new names, Battery Park has been the Mecca for crappy food. So it takes something exceptional to dethrone Liberty View Chinese as the worst restaurant in BPC.

Congratulations Alan Phillips. You now run the worst restaurant in Battery Park City.

Letter: suggestions on sprucing up south BPC

Albany Street and esplanade

Albany Street and esplanade

I always enjoy reading the articles about what is going on in BPC. I have lived in BPC for 4 years, renting for 2 years on North End ave and then we purchased a place on South End Ave for the last 2 years.

Since your focus this year is on beautification of South End Ave, I though of a couple suggestions: Continue reading

Jeff Galloway supports dog owners’ right to use dog-free park

March 28, 2012

At the March 27th CB1 meeting held at the WTC Tower 7, John Fratta led a discussion about the problem of a few bad dog owners who are using the small DeLury park as a dog sewer. Much like the Gateway Plaza “dog mafia” that pushed the BatteryPark.TV reporter last August, someone was reportedly slapped in the face when confronting a dog owner in DeLury Park.

The resolution to make DeLury Park a Continue reading

The sound and the fury: Route 9 DOT beeping at 4:00 AM

Update March 26, 2013 By Steven E Greer

BatteryPark.TV remained in communication with the DOT regarding the unbearable construction noise on the West Side Highway at the Battery Park underpass. Although the DOT had made good efforts, and switched out high pitched “beep beep” noise makers mandated by OSHA, one of the vehicles still had one installed, and was creating as much of a problem as the former entire fleet of vehicles.

The DOT spokesperson, Julie Nadel, tried to lower expectations and prepare the community to simply get used to it. BP.TV replied that such an option was unacceptable, and that if the offending machine could not be removed, then the nighttime work would have to be shifted to the daytime.

As of this week, the remaining machine with the high pitched piercing “beep” noisemakers seems to have been removed. The replacement OSHA-approved noisemakers are lower pitched far more tolerable.

This progress in muting the sleep-depriving noise from the DOT construction was made without any assistance from the building managers of the apartments that are located next to the construction. BP.TV emailed and called several times the managers of the Visioniare, Millennium Towers, and Milford Management, and gave them the names and emails of the DOT to send concerns and relay complaints. Nothing was ever done on behalf of the residents for which they are paid to serve.

Once again, BP.TV got results where others could not.

Update: March 12, 2012 By Steven E. Greer

After our report, below, of the obscene noise made by the state DOT crew on the West Side Highway, disrupting thousands of residents at 4:00 AM, our message was heard. A State DOT person, Julie Nadel, called to inform us that Continue reading
